Spectacle of the Other, Chap 4 Hall, 1997:
In Chapter 4 of Halls ‘Spectacle of the Other’ the explanation of ‘the other’ was extremely interesting to me as in newspapers, magazines, social media etc we are so often presented with stereotypes of beauty and what it is to be accepted. The media bombard us with what we should look like rather than what we do look like. I feel this could be a very interesting subject to explore through photography as it would really pick up on the theme of investigating ideas of representation and identity of a cultural, social or political place (i.e. an individual, a community, a location etc.). As the ‘place’ could be the place of ‘the other’, a place outside of the social norm and of what is socially acceptable.
A specific example I could think of with the theme of ‘The other’ is the model that recently walked the runway…
